It's the classic American road trip, Chicago to Santa Monica on the Mother Road, US Route 66. Back in 2005 Automotive Traveler editorial director Rich Truesdell brought together four pairs of strangers at Detroit's Woodward Dream Cruise and gave the eight muscle car enthusiasts a guided tour of what remains of the Mother Road, from behind the wheel of their own classic muscle cars. The cars included representative of each of the four domestic manufacturers, a 1969 AMC SC/Rambler, a 1969 Camaro SS/RS, a 1967 Dodge Charger White Hat Special (which has been in the owner's family since new), and a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1. This story, which was first published back in 2006 in the first version of Motor Trend Classic, has been treated to a brand new 16-page layout in the current November issue of Automotive Traveler. A unique element of the layout is that every other page is a full page portrait of all four cars at iconic locations along the route, including the corner in Winslow, Arizona, immortalized in the Eagles' classic 1971 single “Take It Easy.” (Is it really possible that it's now approaching its 40th birthday? Boy, do I feel really old.) All the photos from the feature, including some never before published, are now available for purchase here in the Automotive Traveler/Fotki image gallery, from snap shot sized to 30 x 40 poster-sized prints. Please note that these photos date back to 2005, taken with a 6 MP Nikon D70, before the advent of reasonably-priced 10 MP D-SLRs so larger prints and poster will lack some definition when compared poster prints from contemporary cameras. Keep this in mind when ordering larger-sized prints.
